Willy Topp back to fitness
City are convinced Willy Topp's fitness concerns can now be banished.
Although Stuart McCall will not read too much into the pre-season outings so far, Topp's perky performances against Farsley and Guiseley have caught the manager's attention.
He has been paying particular notice to the Chilean's energy levels after last season's muscle-tightening condition which caused his calves to seize up during matches.
Topp is yet to play a full game for City - the longest he spent on the pitch last season was 74 minutes against Rochdale in February.
He had the backs of both legs operated on two months later to cure the problem and the results since have been encouraging.
The striker will feature in his third game in eight days on Wednesday night in the opening leg of the Scottish tour at Dundee. He has already played nearly two-and-a-half hours of football; more than most of the other senior pros.
McCall admits the biggest problem has been preventing Topp from staying on the pitch for longer.
"We wanted to take Billy off earlier at Guiseley but he was really keen to keep playing," said McCall while talking to the Telegraph & Argus. "He wants to stay on the field and prove he can play a full 90 minutes.
"I've had to tell him that there is another game coming up which he will be involved in. Playing twice in 48 hours it's about how quick you can recover, not about proving you can do a full game yet.
"We were quite confident he wouldn't have any problems after the operation. But it's good to see him looking so keen and obviously mentally it must be a lift for him."
Meanwhile Stuart McCall employed trialist Abel Thermeuss up front against Guiseley and may invite the tall Frenchman back for another look in training when City return from Scotland.
Thermeuss, who's previous clubs include Levante in Spain, has also had a trial with Motherwell and most recently at Yeovil.
McCall said: "Yeovil thought he was okay but not for them. It's difficult sometimes but I thought he did all right on Monday and we might have another look at him in training. We'll see what happens."
